MANILA -- Four people have been killed in landslides and floods caused by monsoon rains induced by a tropical depression passing over the main Philippine island of Luzon, the Civial Defense Office said Sunday.

A 45-year-old man drowned in suburban Caloocan city north of Manila, where officials said floodwaters had risen by several feet while three others in San Pablo city south of the capital were buried in landslides, the Civil Defense Office said.

Some parts of metropolitan Manila, as well as the northern provinces of Bulacan and Pampanga and suburban areas in Cavite Province south of the capital were also submerged in floodwaters.

At least 2,000 people have been moved to safer areas, AFP quoted disaster officials as saying.

The state Weather Bureau said the tropical depression is expected to move towards the northern Philippine city of Baguio by Monday, although Manila and nearby provinces will continue to experience strong rains and winds.

Residents in low-lying areas near riverbanks and slopes of mountains were advised to evacuate to safer areas, the Weather Bureau said.
